The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
