Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
